Too Much Pinging Gets You Banned

July 22nd, 2008

Did you know that the default settings of WordPress can get your blog into trouble with the search engines as a result of pinging too often?

When you write the post, WordPress sends out a ping. When you take a look at what you posted and see an error, it pings again when you correct that error. If you do that a few times, the auto-ping settings of WordPress can get you banned for ping spamming.

Solution — install a free WordPress plugin like “MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer” plugin which changes the settings so that only the original post gets pinged. All the subsequent edits dont get pinged.

A NICE FEATURE

If you future-date your posts (for example, if you write 7 posts over the weekend and set them to display one new post per day), then MaxBlogPress will send the ping when the post appears – not when you write it.

The new version of this handy plugin is now available. Here is a quick list of the new features added:

* Limit excessive pinging for frequently updated blog

* Get rid of useless ping services and save your blog from making unnecessary pings

* Know which ping service supports extended ping and which does not

* Know instantly when the blog was pinged and when it was stopped for unnecessary pinging

* Clear the ping log easily

* Now you can ping a huge number of ping services as well

Check it out with screenshots at Pawan Agrawal’s blog…

This should be part of every blogger’s plugins collection. And yes, it’s FREE.

Thanks, Pawan.
