You Don’t Know Dic(tion)

September 3rd, 2010

Diction might seem like a relatively academic pursuit, but it isn’t. What words you decide to employ is absolutely everything. Diction is what gives our written language texture and that all elusive thing that English 101 instructors in college try to impart on all of their students, that thing they call a “voice.” A voice is really all about what it “sounds like.” You get an idea for what something might sound like by the words a person uses on the screen. You can practically hear the British accent when you read the words “bloke” or “rubbish.” Even the spellings of words are acutely particular when it comes to imparting a voice to your reader. This is a common mistake amongst copywriters on the web. They just fill an order that comes in through the queue, and don’t really pay any mind to the fact that the client’s URL carries a UK domain, or some other country-specific domain. And that’s a huge problem. There are blog admins that look for just this thing. There are blog admins that will only take content that really resonates at that personal level, and if you’re not up to snuff, up to speed on the readership, how they interpret things, what their reading styles are, well then, you’re all out of luck. You’ll have a very low acceptance score amongst directories, sites, and blogs. One of the gravest mistakes about these fly by night SEO operations that pick up copywriters in other countries on the cheap, like India and the Philippines, is that they become too preoccupied with the numbers. You know, we all grew up in the Sandhill Area of Palo Alto. A number of us still live in Atherton. We have friends that are major share holders in the largest web search engine in the world; we know the innards of a particular search engine in Redwood City, and how they’ve really blown chances to surpass Mountain View, over and over again (we know this from the inside). And we know how incredibly human search is right now; humans are still making up for a good bulk of the decision making about searching on the web. Algorithms are changed and manipulated hundreds of times a year, in order to adjust for accuracy, not to adjust to SEO folks, but to pull up better results for people.
