Search engine optimisation (SEO) is big business at the moment. There are a lot of people who will spend huge amounts of money to get their website pages ranking as high as possible in the search engines like Google. Obviously no one can actually guarantee to get a website to the top of the Google rankings but they will still charge a lot of money and make promises that they can do this. Some of the more unscrupulous of these companies will use black hat techniques that may work in the short term but could get a website banned from a search engine. With all the hype surrounding SEO it will be interesting to see what happens in the future.
As long as there are people wanting their websites to do well in the search engine results it is likely that they will continue to pay for SEO services. There are plenty of companies who would prefer to pay for an SEO expert to look after this area of their business even though they would be able to find out all they needed to know about SEO in an afternoon. But for those companies that would not be able to keep up with the constantly changing SEO tools, paying someone to take care of their SEO requirements might be the better option.
The shape of the internet in five or ten years is impossible to predict. Nobody knows what search engines will be like in the future; they could be hugely advanced. Perhaps one day they will be able to judge the value of an article purely by its usefulness to the reader. But for the moment it seems as though search engine optimisation is here to stay.
