When you’re just beginning your internet marketing journey, it can quickly become quite confusing. In a matter of days you’re spending in excess of 10 to 12 hours every day on the web without making any money for your so called ‘work’. You could spend years trying to learn Internet marketing, failing and ending up in debt more than earning anything out of it. It can be pretty ugly for those who begin with existing financial issue. A typical reason is people believe the gurus who say online marketing is easy and you can make a lot of money quickly. They think most of the big money that is made on the Internet is made through little effort and can make them rich overnight.

Nothing can be further from the truth. All the millionaires you’ve read about put hard work into it and many years of effort and more hard work. Nothing will ever get done if you only learn and never apply what you learn. Setting achievable goals and realizing there will be hard work involved is the smart thing to do. The same rules apply for success whether you’re online, or offline. Now let’s move into some of the more common missteps committed by those who are new to online marketing.

A common mistake made by the majority of online marketers is they fail to build a targeted list of subscribers or prospects. You could be running your online business for years but if you don’t have a list, you aren’t really building a long term business. Building a list should be your first priority since it gives you the opportunity to make more sales, earn more money on the backend and have repeat customers.

Another mistake that newbies make when they enter Internet marketing is that they join too many email lists and try to listen and follow every expert’s advice. This results in a feeling of confusion and not knowing what to do next. What happens then is that one’s inbox gets overloaded with lots of different plans, each pointing in a slightly different direction. Even if a lot of the information is great, having too much of it makes action impossible.

The first step towards fixing this mistake is to unsubscribe from the majority of these mailing lists and have only 1 or 2 active that you really think are genuinely helpful. It’s important to shift your focus from collecting information to taking action on a few realistic plans. There is no better way to feel more confident than to take real action. Don’t let temporary failures get you down; just keep trying and you will inevitably succeed sooner or later.

If you hope to succeed with IM, then make darn sure you have a solid plan. Poor planning will lead you in circles. Organize your goals with pen and paper, make them something you can actually do, and then attack them in order.
