Not every home business needs large amounts of funding, or business loans. They don’t all need hours of consulting with attorneys, and they don’t need to spend money on inventory and equipment.
Most people interested in working at home or starting a home business simply want to be freelancers. They have no interest in hiring employees, building a business, or becoming famous. They just want to make enough to pay the bills. Many individuals do at home what they did at an office. Accounting, sales, property management or customer service are common places to start.
Not sure exactly what kind of business you can start? How about starting completely over and learning something new. Get your real estate license. Study for your securities license or even an insurance license. These are great places to start, especially if you want part time. Even babysitting, gardening, or cabinetry can turn into full time at home businesses.
First, find your state’s business website. It has all the information you need regarding filing your original paperwork (articles of organization, etc.), filing for a fictitious name, and how to submit paperwork with the appropriate fees. Most likely it will also have information on how to do a name search to make sure you choose a company name that isn’t already in use.
You will then need to print off a few forms (Articles of Organization or Incorporation), write a check, and mail them in. In a few weeks you should receive a simple letter from your state saying you can now do business.
Once you pay your fee, about $125 in each state, and send in your paperwork, you’ll get a response back within a few weeks with permission to do business in that state.
